HIM at Donauinselfest 2010 - report by Varjostaa

Na ceste z Viedne, pod tlakom emócií, únavy, nedostatku spánku, vody a takmer žiadneho jedla = koncert HIM na Donauinsel festivale...

Už o jedenástej na obed prvé osoby v čiernom zaujímajú pozície v strede pred bariérami, v priebehu dvoch hodín ich počet podrastie o malé skupinky po celej dĺžke prvého radu. Fanatizmus? Proste snaha vydobyť a obhájiť si čo najlepšie miesto pred pódium. Počuť taliančinu, nemčinu, no iróniou je, že takmer celý prvý rad obsadili fanúšikovia zo Slovenska. Je vidieť, že HIM v týchto končinách už pár rokov nehrali, na Slovensku sa to číslo vyšplhalo na nekonečných 5 rokov. Slnko praží, tieň v tejto časti areálu ATV/Antenne Rock Bühne nie je takmer žiadny. Opretí o bariéry, chrbtom k pódiu znudene sledujeme vyčínanie rakúskych priaznivcov skupiny Die 3 Extremen. Tvrdší boj/ snaha o obhájenie pozícií nastala jedine pri skupine From dawn to fall kedy je fanúšikovia sa chceli silou mocou dostať dopredu. No pri zomknutej "obrane" čiernej armády veľmi podobnej obrane Paraguajského futbalového tímu v zápase s Novým Zélandom, nemali šancu.

Album cover actually causes more dizziness as on PC screen, so the larger version of screen print Saint Scream has even stronger influence.
Otherwise it is relatively clean and non-intrusive, album disc is in pink (pink-orange, depends on the light), a bonus disc in plain black with word BAUDELAIRE in braille letters.

As discussed in many forums, a photo booklet contains only Ville Valo photo and as he pointed, the credit informs about producer, but members or Ville are not mentioned. Just under braille letters is written "AC (screamworks acoustic) by Valo". It provoked a number of discussions, but I personally have to agree with Ville, if music catch you, everything you want to know, you can simply google.

I have not examined whether there are differences between the booklets of one-disc, two-disc and heartagram album version with Saint Scream ... but I suppose that information about "2rabbits Studios Screenprint" lacks the classic versions. In general, I love acoustic versions of HIM songs and already the first seconds of In Venere Veritas gives me hope that the Baudelaire In Braille would not be exception... give us the opportunity to hear the whole album in acoustic version was great idea.

This time, I will not speak about songs individually, as I did at Screamworks review. After only first minutes, I feel that this piece of art deserves to be considered as a whole. Tracks cleared of several-weeks, perhaps months work with different instruments and effects, conceived very easily and clearly gives shine for Valo's voice and poetism.

True is that some could be simplified even more, in my case it is Heartkiller which somehow undermined my overall opinion of the bonus disc, with some he could play and show us more of him....
Sometimes the idea occur to me that Ville failed to completely abandon sound effects (which I would not use in acoustic version), that it could be a bit difficult for him to depersonalize of the album, finished only a moment before. As almost of all albums and generally HIM music, also Baudelaire In Braille is full of contradictions...

Finally, finally I'm here with a review.... long process and it would be much longer if I wouldn't get code for a legal download (thanks Kelly and Euro Rock Radio). The thing is that my Screamworks limited edition still didn't arrived.
...and I set myself this rule, do not listen to album till I own it, so I resisted to HIM MySpace, I didn't even listened to the videos of Like St. Valentine and Shatter Me With Hope! Well, I heard Shatter Me With Hope and Heartkiller because I'm a proud owner of the single... And sure, I do not support illegally downloading.
This review will be divided into more parts, I have only album tracks, review of the bonus Baudelaire in Braille will come as soon as I put my hands on it....hope, I'll survive till then.

Konečne som tu s recenziou.... bol to dlhý proces a bol by ešte dlhší, keby som nedostala kód na legálne stiahnutie (vďaka Kelly a Euro Rock Radio). Problém bol v tom, že moja Screamworks limitovaná edícia stále nedošla.
...a mám také pravidlo, nevypočuť si album pokým ho nevlastním, takže som odolala HIM MySpace, nevypočula som si dokonca ani videá Like St. Valentine a Shatter Me With Hope! Vlastne, Shatter Me With Hope a Heartkiller som počula, keďže som hrdou majiteľkou singlu... No a samozrejme, ilegálne sťahovanie nepodporujem.
Táto recenzia bude rozdelená do viacerých častí, mám totiž len albumové skladby, recenzia na bonusový disk Baudelaire in Braille bude akonáhle sa mi dostane do rúk...dúfam že dovtedy prežijem.

Varjostaa Heartkiller single review

Release date in Finland was 27 of January and already at 29 I had it at home! Yeah, Finnish post (suomi posti) is great, and this time didn’t our shit it up.
Well, cover is well known to all, slim jewel case, three tracks.

Heartkiller (album version)
I can’t compare it to other songs from album, but the more I listen to it, the more I think it was great choice. Pretty catchy, interesting words game, strong chorus.

Shatter Me with Hope (The Sword of Democles)
Strong guitar intro, Ville’s voice sort of Razorblade Romance-like. It is kind of Right Here In my Arms song, with pretty good Linde’s guitar, easy drums and what is for song like this important, simple memorable chorus.
„Run, come shatter me now, shatter me with hope
Crawl, come breathe me in, bleed out all sorrow“

Heartkiller (Moordeb version)
Let say almost acoustic version. Honestly saying, I didn’t like it from first hearing. There is something what I mind. After another chance I define it to 03:00 – 03:07 section.
And on third I started to accept this version (yeah, except that few seconds)
But still I have that feeling that they just paste vocals from album version to guitar (and on some place not so well).

Dátum vydania vo Fínsku bol stanovený na 27. januára a už 29 som ho mala doma. Áno, skvelá fínska pošta a tentokrát to ani naša nepokašlala.
Obal singlu je nám všetkým známy, tenký platový kryt, tri skladby.

Heartkiller (albumová verzia)
Nemôžem porovnať s inými skladbami z albumu, ale čím viac ju počúvam, tým viac si myslím že to bol skvelý výber. Celkom chytľavá, zaujímavá hra slov, silné refrény.

Shatter Me with Hope (The Sword of Democles)
Silný gitarový vstup, Ville hlas akoby z čias Razorblade Romance. Štýl skladby Right Here In my Arms, s celkom dobrou gitarovou pasážou Lindeho, jednoduchými bicími a čo je pre takúto skladbu najdôležitejšie, ľahko zapamätateľným refrénom.

Heartkiller (Moordeb verzia)
Povedzme takmer akustická verzia. Pravdupovediac, nepáčila sa mi na prvé vypočutie. Je v nej niečo čo mi vadí. Po ďalšej šanci som to neičo zadefinovala na pasáž 03:00 - 03:07. A na tretie vypočutie som túto verziu začala akceptovať (až na tých pár sekúnd). NO ale stále mám pocit ako keby len zlepili spev z albumovej verzii s gitarou (a aj to nie úplne dobre).

"S veľkým očakávaním som čakala na siedmy štúdiový album Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice. Kúpila som si prvý singel Heartkiller hneď ako bol vydaný a bola som trocha prekvapená tým, čo som počula. Bolo to iné, ale stále definitívne HIM a veľmi chytľavé. Keď skupina dala fanúšikom skorý valentínsky darček v podobe videa ku skladbe Like Saint Valentine, okamžite som sa do tejto skladby zamilovala. Keďže boli dostupné len úryvky piesní (hoci európsky Heartkiller singel obsahoval aj skladbu Shatter Me With Hope) je ťažké si spraviť z útržkov reálnu predstavu o albume.
Včera mi bola daná možnosť vypočuť si ho celý a dovoľte mi povedať, HIM prekonali sami seba. Bola som, celkom proste, očarená tým čo som počula. Diametrálne odlišný od posledného albumu Venus Doom, Screamworks je priamy rockový album, ktorý za sebou zanecháva temnotu Venus Doom a dáva vám pocit, že všetky tieto záležitosti lásky v konečnom dôsledku nemusia byť tak zlé. Iste, môže ublížiť, ale stojí za to.
Počula som sťažnosti od fanúšikov, že je to priveľmi popové a chápem prečo sa im to tak mohlo zdať. Áno, v niektorých skladbách počuť niekoľko popových podtónov, ale verte mi, dá sa to. Okrem toho je z albumu veľmi cítiť pocit 80. rokov, keďže je použitých veľa synťákov, ale HIM boli vždy tak trocha "cheesy" (pozn. tak na toto nemám výraz, ale snáď viete čo tým chcela Celtic Angel povedať). Valo vie, že brať sa príliš vážne nie je zdravé a je to jasne vidieť na časti tohto albumu. Ale nemajte obavy, melanchólia, hra so slovami, vražedné rify, vrčanie, vzdychy, výkriky posadnutosti, títo chalani z Fínska sú stále veľmi súčasný. Ak by som to mala porovnať k niektorému z predchádzajúcich albumov, pravdepodobne by som povedala že je to mix Love Metal a Razorblade Roamance. To urobí dlhoročných fanúšikov šťastnými ale aj priláka nových.
Ak sa viac nechcete dozvedieť, teraz prestaňte čítať. Pokiaľ nie, pokračujem s pocitmi ku každej jednej skladbe.
