Ville Valo bol, rovnako ako mnoho jeho kolegov, trochu skeptický, keď sme ho požiadali, rozpitvať 13 skladieb albumu Screamworks. Ale ako náhle začal sympatický Fín hovoriť, bol sotva zastaviteľný.
"Nádej je veľmi dôležitá téma albumu, ak mám byť konkrétny, boj o nádej", vysvetľuje Ville ešte predtým ako sa začne podrobnejšie venovať jednotlivým skladbám. In Venere Veritas
Východiskovým bodom tejto piesne bol rozhovor. Dievča s ktorým som sa rozprával povedalo, že má pocit akoby sa rozpadala. Odpovedal som: "Rozpadnime sa spolu". To je pôvod veršu "Rozpadnime sa teraz spoločne", ktorá sa otvára pieseň. Svojím spôsobom je to vodiaca línia. Ale netreba to brať doslovne. Nie je to o podrezaní si zápästia a spoločnej samovražde. No nebudeme žiť večne, a každý dych nás približuje k okamihu, kedy zomrieme. V tomto zmysle ten verš znamená "Poďme spolu zostarnúť". Pozerať sa týmto spôsobom na pieseň je celkom romantické, ale samozrejme, páči sa mi skutočnosť, že je možné ju interpretovať rôznymi spôsobmi. Avšak je pomerne priama, bez zásterok a toto bol ten dôvod prečo sme ju vybrali ako úvodnú skladbu albumu. Som rád že názov je v latinčine. Je to v podstate slovná hračka odvodená od "in vino veritas" (vo víne je pravda). Hľadal som správne slovo pre lásku. Najskôr som zvažoval "Venus" (Venuša), ktoré som vždy miloval a ktoré bolo v názve nášho posledného albumu. Ale potom som si uvedomil, že "Venere" je oveľa lepšie, pretože to nie je až tak o duchovnej stránke, ako je fyzickej stránke lásky. Nehovorím latinsky, ale bola to veľká zábava skúšať, ktoré slovo najlepšie vyhovuje a ako je možné ho interpretovať.
Scared to Death

Takže pieseň je zmes romantickosti, s takmer umrnčanou drámou a biblickým parafrázovaním spoznať niekoho – a to všetko len v jednom verši. Som veľký fanúšik takýchto detailov.
Heartkiller
Táto skladba je o pravidlách spoločnosti, nároky ktoré sú na teba kladené, dokážu často udusiť plamene vášne. Takže by si mal mať možnosť ísť a nebáť sa riskovať na ceste ku šťastiu. Môj obľúbený verš je Let me be a flatliner for a heartkiller (Dovoľ mi byť rovnou čiarou vraha srdca), pretože je to paradox. Som „flatliner“ (rovná čiara) čakajúci na infarkt, ktorý ho opäť zabije. Rovnako ako všetko v živote je to tiež cyklus. Verš Top hats off to the return of the beat to lick a wound to (Skladáme klobúky pred návratom tlkotu, za ktorého si lížeme rany) možno interpretovať rôznymi spôsobmi. Myslel som rytmus hudby alebo srdca? Mám rád, keď môžeš text interpretovať rôzne. Na jednej strane veľa veršov má veľmi suchý zmysel pre humor a pracuje s rôznymi klišé a potom tam je osobný aspekt, o ktorom zvyčajne nehovorím, pretože ak by som, zmizne tá tajomnosť.

Táto pieseň pre mňa symbolizuje život. "Život je umierajúca pieseň" - myslím, že oddelene je to veľmi krásny verš. Život je ako pieseň. Nevyhnutne sa blíži ku koncu. Kúsok po kúsku doznieva, ale je aj ako pieseň, ktorú si môžeš pospevovať: We hum along to the evening sun till we are no more (Pospevujeme si na večernom slnku, až kým nezmizneme). Je jedným z najlepších veršov aké som kedy napísal. Podobne ako u "In Venere Veritas", nie je to nevyhnutne motto ako "Seize the Day", ale to o pochopení že nebudeme žiť večne, a že by sme si mali ceniť čas čo máme. Samozrejme to nie je nič nové (smeje sa).
Disarm Me (with your Loneliness)
S touto piesňou sme sa priblížili k tradičnej rockovej balade, ako nikdy predtým. Avšak gitarové pasáže v tejto skladbe sú tvrdšie ako na mnohých iných skladieb na albume. Vždy som bol blázon do Mazzy Star. Nálada tejto piesne je inšpirovaná "Fade Into You". Začal som na nej pracovať pred rokmi. Vo všeobecnosti sú texty o podvodnej povahe vzťahov.
Love, the Hardest Way
Je to o niekom, kto ti je tak blízky srdcu, koho tak veľmi miluješ, že ho nedokážeš nechať ísť. Je nesmierne ťažké, pretože vzťahy a láska - alebo to, čo ľudia nazývajú láskou - sú plné egoizmu. Na konci dňa je často len "Ja, ja, ja" a nie "som tvoja/tvoj". Svojím spôsobom je to pieseň o tom, aké ťažké je byť v partnerskom vzťahu so mnou. "Ak so mňou ostaneš, nebude to ľahké". V tomto zmysle sú vzťahy množstvo problémov, ktoré budete riešiť spoločne, ako matematickú rovnicu, ktorú riešite spolužitím.
Katherine Wheel
Táto pieseň bola napísaná z veľmi pokornej pozície. Bol som v situácii, kedy som úplne niekomu prepadol. To je dôvod prečo je verš These are the things you make me do Katherine Wheel I am burning for you (To je to čo si ma prinútila spraviť, mučená Katherine, horím láskou k tebe) jedným z kľúčových veršov celého albumu. Názov je poctou Sv. Kataríny z Alexandrie, ktorá by mala byť polámaná na mučiacom kolese, ale koleso sa zlomilo, ako je všeobecne známe. Nakoniec bola popravená. Mám rád ten aspekt kolobehu. Koleso sa točí ako život. V druhom verši sa hovorí Holding hands won't be enough In a world giving head to a gun (Držať sa za ruky nestačí vo svete ktorý ti prikladá hlaveň zbrane k spánku). Pre mňa to znamená, že neexistujú žiadne tabu už v tomto svete a ľudia sú nútení hľadať stále nové extrémy, testovať samých seba, zisťovať hranice svojej existencie. Vezmite si mládež napríklad, fajčenie trávy už nič neznamená. V 80. rokoch to bolo ešte tabu. V súčasnej dobe deti berú metamfetamíny a robia rôzne bláznivé veci. Nové video Rammstein je tomu dobrým príkladom: Poznám veľa mladých, ktorým sa Rammstein páči ale toto video by nemali vidieť. Pokiaľ je mi známe, dokonca aj niektorí chalani z kapely majú deti. Skutočne by chceli aby ich deti to video videli? Podľa mňa to prekračuje hranice.
In the Arms of Rain
Východiskovým bodom pre túto pieseň bola spomienka z detstva. Bežal som s mojím bratom za teplého dažďa, zatiaľ čo za nami sa valila búrka a bolo vidieť blesky na oblohe. Je to jedna z najsilnejších spomienok z môjho detstva. Keď som sa posadil písať túto pieseň, myslel som na túto chvíľu. Je to o nás ako rastieme a vyberáme si rôzne životné cesty, ale dážď je stále rovnaký, ako aj predtým. Tak veľmi ako sa snažíš zmeniť sám seba, tak sú isté konštanty, ktoré sa nikdy nezmenia.
Ode to Solitude
Lovesong o samote, ak si ju predstavíte ako osobu. "Hej, milý pán Osamelosť – alebo pani ak chcete – strávil som dlhé hodiny vo vašej spoločnosti a je mi príjemná, ale teraz je čas otvoriť dvere a ísť ďalej". Je to lepšie ako sa zavrieť medzi štyri steny a otočiť sa chrbtom k svetu tak, ako som to ja zvykol. Je to o oslave existencie samoty..
Shatter me with Hope
Pieseň je úplne pozitívna. Ak chceš mať nádej a byť raz šťastný, musíš najskôr trpieť. Musíš si ľahnúť na klincovú posteľ, aby si mohol dosiahnuť vyšší stav vedomia. Táto skladba je o niečom podobnom. "Prosím, zabi ma svojou láskou!" Na konci textu je volanie o pomoc, Come breathe me in, bleed out all sorrows (Daj mi nadýchnuť, vyplav všetok smútok) je pozitívne, ale spievame a hráme túto pieseň veľmi agresívnym spôsobom, pretože si myslím, že boj o nádej, môže byť veľmi agresívny a násilný a môže zanechať niekoľko jaziev.
Acoustic Funeral (For Love in Limbo)
Black Sabbath majú pieseň "Electric Funeral", takže tento názov je niečo ako pocta. Keď som písal túto pieseň, veľa som čítal T.S. Eliot. Známy verš "Toto je spôsob, akým svet končí. Nie úderom, ale s fňukaním" je od neho (pozn. z diela The Hollowmen). Zmiešal som to s atmosférou piesne „Enjoy the Silence" od Depeche Mode (smeje sa). Myslel som na to ako často je len ticho na konci. Ide o to pripraviť sa na okamih, keď je všetko už povedané a urobené aj napriek tomu že tú osobu máte radi. No napriek tomuto je to pieseň o nádeji.
Like St. Valentine
Toto je prvá pieseň čo sme napísali na album. To je dôvod, prečo je to trochu priamejšie a viac punk, ako ostatné. Pieseň vznikla, keď som bol na mieste, kde sa skutočne všetko zdalo byť beznádejné. Spieval som verš "Ahoj, babe, dovoľ mi byť tvojou Valentínkou" sám pre seba. Pre mňa je to typické pre HIM - a určitým spôsobom hlúpe. To je dôvod, prečo som chcel toto zakomponovať do pieseň a nájsť nečakaný obrat. Potom som čítal o Sv. Kataríne z Alexandrie a o svätom Valentínovi. A to je dôvod, prečo sa na konci piesne hovorí: "Poprav ma ako sv. Valentína" Táto pieseň je opäť o mne chcieť byť vykúpený z osamelosti a prebudený k životu bez ohľadu na cenu.
The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness
Je to slovná hračka klasickej vety "Predzvesť blížiacej sa katastrofy". Pieseň a názov tematicky nadväzuje na "Scared to death“, že aj krásnych a príjemných vecí sa môžeš obávať. Názov môže byť považovaný za súhrn celého albumu. Ak si bol priateľom samoty tak dlho a žil život osamelého vlka, potrebuješ veľa odvahy, odvrátiť sa od tohto a urobiť krok do "krajiny živých". V tejto piesni som premýšľal o mojich ďalších krokoch. Ide o otázku, prečo sú tvoje sny a realita tak často od seba vzdialené, prečo je tak ťažké niektoré veci urobiť. Čo mi bráni povedať čo chcem povedať? V skratke: Strachu z neúspechu.
Ville Valo was, like many of his collegues, a bit skeptical when we asked him to analyze the 13 songs of Screamworks. But once the likeable Finn got started, he was barely stoppable.
"Hope was a very essential topic on the album, to be more specific – the fight for hope", explains Ville before we get to the single songs in more detail. "Many other artists who sing about hope think that it is something every single person carries within himself. I'm not so sure if that's true. For me, hope is the little light guiding you the way, which reminds you that life does have a sense, that you have goals. To believe in that is often more easily said than done."
In Venere Veritas
The starting point to that song was a conversation. The girl I was talking to said she had the feeling of falling apart. I answered: "Let's fall apart together." That's the origin of the line "Let's fall apart together now" which opens up the song. In a way this was a pick-up line. But you can't take that literally. It's not about slitting your wrists and kill yourselves together. But we won't live forever and every breath takes us closer to the moment we die. In that sense the line means "Let's grow old together." Seen like that the meaning of the song is pretty romantic but of course I like the fact that you can interpret it in different ways. However it's pretty direct and in your face and this was the reason why we picked the song to be the opener for the album. And I like the title being in Latin. It's a pun originating from "in vino veritas" (in wine there's truth). I was looking for the right word for love. First I had "Venus" which I have always loved and which was in the title of our last album. But then I realized that "venere" is much better since it's not so much about the spiritual side than the physical side of love. I don't speak Latin but it was great fun to figure out which word fits best and how you can interpret it.
Scared to Death
This song is about everybody making his experiences. Not all have been good ones but they stick in your memory and sometimes prevent you from darting into a new relationship. The chorus I'm not afraid to say I love you any more than I was before is about just that. Then there's the first line In the biblical sense and sensibility let me know you which is one of the most important lines on the album for me since knowing somebody in the biblical sense means having sex with him/her. "Let me know you in the biblical sense" is the best pick-up line I know – even though I haven't tried it yet! The line continuing with "... and sensibility" is a reference to Jane Austens "Sense and Sensibility". So the song is a mixture of romantic, almost whiny drama and the biblical paraphrase of getting to know someone – and all that in just one line. I'm a big fan of those details.
Heartkiller
This song is about rules of society, demands on you, which can often suffocate the flames of passion. So you should have the opportunity of letting yourself go and not being afraid to take risks on the way to happiness. My favorite line is Let me be a flatliner for a heartkiller because it's paradox. I'm a flatliner waiting for a heartkiller which kills him again. Like everything in life this is a cycle as well. The line Top hats off to the return of the beat to lick a wound to can be interpreted in different ways. Did I mean the beat of the rhythm of music or the heartbeat? I like it when you can interpret lyrics differently. On the one hand many lines have a very dry sense of humor and work with different cliches and then there is the personal aspect which I usually don't talk about because if I would the mystery would disappear.
Dying Song
This song symbolizes life for me. "Life is a dying song" – I think taken separately this is a very beautiful line. Life is like a song. It inevitably draws to a close. It dies away bit by bit but it's also like a song to which you can hum along: We hum along to the evening sun, till we are no more. This is one of the best lines I've ever written. Similar to In Venere Veritas it's not necessarily a motto like "Seize the Day" but it's about the perception that we're not gonna live forever and that we should value the time we have. Of course this is nothing new (laughs).
Disarm me (With your Loneliness)
With this song we get closer to a traditional rock ballad than never before. However the guitars on this track are harder than on many other tracks on the album. I've always been a sucker for Mazzy Star. The mood of this track is inspired by "Fade into you". I started working on this track years ago. The lyrics are about the deceitful nature of relationships in general.
Love, the hardes Way
It's about somebody being so close to your heart, whom you love so much that you can let him/her go. This is incredibly difficult since relationships and love – or what people call love – are full of egoism. At the end of the day it's often "I, I, I" instead of "I'm all yours!" In a way the song is about how difficult it is being in a relationship with me. "If you stay with me it won't be easy!" In this sense relationships are a series of problems which you solve together, like a mathematical equation which you solve by living together.
Katherine Wheel
This song was written from a very submissive position. I was in a situation where I had completely fallen for somebody. This is why These are the things you make me do, Katherine Wheel, I'm burning for you is one of the keylines of the whole album. The title is a homage to St. Katharina of Alexandria who should have been broken on the wheel but the wheel broke as is generally known. In the end she was beheaded. I like the aspect of rotation about that. The wheel turns like life. In the second verse it says Holding hands is not enough in a world giving head to a gun. For me this means that there are no taboos anymore in this world and people are forced to search for ever new extremes to test themselves and to detect the limits of their existance. Take teenagers for example: Smoking pott doesn't mean anything. In the 80s this was still a taboo. Nowadays the kids take Methamphetamines and do all kinds of crazy stuff. The new Rammstein video is a really good example: It's really funny but I know a lot of kids who really like Rammstein and they shouldn't be allowed to see that. As far as I know even some guys in the band have children. Would they really want their kids to see that video? For me this is crossing the line.
In the Arms of Rain
Starting point for that song was a childhood memory. I was running through the warm summer rain with my brother while the thunder was rolling behind us and you could see lightning in the sky. This is one of the strongest memories I have about my childhood. When I sat down to write that song I had to think about that moment. It's about us growing up and taking different paths but the rain still is the same than back then. As much as you realign yourself there are certain constants which never change.
Ode to Solitude
A lovesong to solitude if you picture it as a person. "Hey, dear Mr. Solitude – or Miss if you prefer that – I spent endless hours with you and your company is dear to me but now it's time to open the door and move on." This is better than locking yourself into your 4 walls like a hermite and turning your back on the world like I used to do. It's about celebrating the existance of solitude as there's no Ying without a Yang.
Shatter me with Hope
The song is absolutely positive. To have hope and be happy eventually you sometimes have to suffer first. You have to lay down on the nail bed to be able to reach a higher state of consciousness. This song is about something similar. "Please slay me with your love!" In the end the text is a cry for help. Come breath me in, bleed out all sorrow is pretty positive but we sing and play the song in a very aggressive way since I think that the fight for hope can be very aggressive and violent and might even leave some scars.
Acoustic Funeral (For Love in Limbo)
Black Sabbath have a song called "Electric Funeral" so the title is something like a homage. When I wrote the song I was reading a lot of T.S. Eliot. The famous line: "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper" is by him. I mixed that with the vibe of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" (laughs). I thought about how there's often just silence at the end. It's about preparing for the moment when everything is said and done even though you really like that person. Even though it's a hopeful song.
Like St. Valentine
This is the first song we wrote for the album. This is why it's a bit more direct and punky than the rest. The song came into being when I was at a point where indeed everything seemed to be hopeless. I was singing the line "Hey baby let me be your valentine" to myself. For me this is typical for HIM – and somehow pretty stupid. That's why I wanted to include it into a song and find an unexpected turn. Then I read about St. Katharina of Alexandria and then about St. Valentine. And that's the reason why the end of the song says: "Behead my like St. Valentine." That song is again about me wanting to be redeemed from loneliness and awaken to live again no matter the cost.
The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness
This is a pun of the classical sentence "The Foreboding Sense of Impending Doom." The song and the title thematically affiliate to "Scared to Death": that you can be afraid of beautiful and nice things as well. The title can be read as a summary of the whole album. If you have been a friend of solitude for so long and have lived the life of a lonely wolf, you need a lot of courage to turn away from this and to take a step into the "land of the living". In this song I ponder about my next steps. It's about the question why your dreams and reality often are so far away from each other and why it's so difficult to get certain things done. What keeps me from saying the things I want to say? In short: It's probably about the fear to fail.

Disarm Me (with your Loneliness)
S touto piesňou sme sa priblížili k tradičnej rockovej balade, ako nikdy predtým. Avšak gitarové pasáže v tejto skladbe sú tvrdšie ako na mnohých iných skladieb na albume. Vždy som bol blázon do Mazzy Star. Nálada tejto piesne je inšpirovaná "Fade Into You". Začal som na nej pracovať pred rokmi. Vo všeobecnosti sú texty o podvodnej povahe vzťahov.
Love, the Hardest Way
Je to o niekom, kto ti je tak blízky srdcu, koho tak veľmi miluješ, že ho nedokážeš nechať ísť. Je nesmierne ťažké, pretože vzťahy a láska - alebo to, čo ľudia nazývajú láskou - sú plné egoizmu. Na konci dňa je často len "Ja, ja, ja" a nie "som tvoja/tvoj". Svojím spôsobom je to pieseň o tom, aké ťažké je byť v partnerskom vzťahu so mnou. "Ak so mňou ostaneš, nebude to ľahké". V tomto zmysle sú vzťahy množstvo problémov, ktoré budete riešiť spoločne, ako matematickú rovnicu, ktorú riešite spolužitím.
Katherine Wheel
Táto pieseň bola napísaná z veľmi pokornej pozície. Bol som v situácii, kedy som úplne niekomu prepadol. To je dôvod prečo je verš These are the things you make me do Katherine Wheel I am burning for you (To je to čo si ma prinútila spraviť, mučená Katherine, horím láskou k tebe) jedným z kľúčových veršov celého albumu. Názov je poctou Sv. Kataríny z Alexandrie, ktorá by mala byť polámaná na mučiacom kolese, ale koleso sa zlomilo, ako je všeobecne známe. Nakoniec bola popravená. Mám rád ten aspekt kolobehu. Koleso sa točí ako život. V druhom verši sa hovorí Holding hands won't be enough In a world giving head to a gun (Držať sa za ruky nestačí vo svete ktorý ti prikladá hlaveň zbrane k spánku). Pre mňa to znamená, že neexistujú žiadne tabu už v tomto svete a ľudia sú nútení hľadať stále nové extrémy, testovať samých seba, zisťovať hranice svojej existencie. Vezmite si mládež napríklad, fajčenie trávy už nič neznamená. V 80. rokoch to bolo ešte tabu. V súčasnej dobe deti berú metamfetamíny a robia rôzne bláznivé veci. Nové video Rammstein je tomu dobrým príkladom: Poznám veľa mladých, ktorým sa Rammstein páči ale toto video by nemali vidieť. Pokiaľ je mi známe, dokonca aj niektorí chalani z kapely majú deti. Skutočne by chceli aby ich deti to video videli? Podľa mňa to prekračuje hranice.
In the Arms of Rain
Východiskovým bodom pre túto pieseň bola spomienka z detstva. Bežal som s mojím bratom za teplého dažďa, zatiaľ čo za nami sa valila búrka a bolo vidieť blesky na oblohe. Je to jedna z najsilnejších spomienok z môjho detstva. Keď som sa posadil písať túto pieseň, myslel som na túto chvíľu. Je to o nás ako rastieme a vyberáme si rôzne životné cesty, ale dážď je stále rovnaký, ako aj predtým. Tak veľmi ako sa snažíš zmeniť sám seba, tak sú isté konštanty, ktoré sa nikdy nezmenia.
Ode to Solitude
Lovesong o samote, ak si ju predstavíte ako osobu. "Hej, milý pán Osamelosť – alebo pani ak chcete – strávil som dlhé hodiny vo vašej spoločnosti a je mi príjemná, ale teraz je čas otvoriť dvere a ísť ďalej". Je to lepšie ako sa zavrieť medzi štyri steny a otočiť sa chrbtom k svetu tak, ako som to ja zvykol. Je to o oslave existencie samoty..
Shatter me with Hope
Pieseň je úplne pozitívna. Ak chceš mať nádej a byť raz šťastný, musíš najskôr trpieť. Musíš si ľahnúť na klincovú posteľ, aby si mohol dosiahnuť vyšší stav vedomia. Táto skladba je o niečom podobnom. "Prosím, zabi ma svojou láskou!" Na konci textu je volanie o pomoc, Come breathe me in, bleed out all sorrows (Daj mi nadýchnuť, vyplav všetok smútok) je pozitívne, ale spievame a hráme túto pieseň veľmi agresívnym spôsobom, pretože si myslím, že boj o nádej, môže byť veľmi agresívny a násilný a môže zanechať niekoľko jaziev.
Acoustic Funeral (For Love in Limbo)
Black Sabbath majú pieseň "Electric Funeral", takže tento názov je niečo ako pocta. Keď som písal túto pieseň, veľa som čítal T.S. Eliot. Známy verš "Toto je spôsob, akým svet končí. Nie úderom, ale s fňukaním" je od neho (pozn. z diela The Hollowmen). Zmiešal som to s atmosférou piesne „Enjoy the Silence" od Depeche Mode (smeje sa). Myslel som na to ako často je len ticho na konci. Ide o to pripraviť sa na okamih, keď je všetko už povedané a urobené aj napriek tomu že tú osobu máte radi. No napriek tomuto je to pieseň o nádeji.
Like St. Valentine
Toto je prvá pieseň čo sme napísali na album. To je dôvod, prečo je to trochu priamejšie a viac punk, ako ostatné. Pieseň vznikla, keď som bol na mieste, kde sa skutočne všetko zdalo byť beznádejné. Spieval som verš "Ahoj, babe, dovoľ mi byť tvojou Valentínkou" sám pre seba. Pre mňa je to typické pre HIM - a určitým spôsobom hlúpe. To je dôvod, prečo som chcel toto zakomponovať do pieseň a nájsť nečakaný obrat. Potom som čítal o Sv. Kataríne z Alexandrie a o svätom Valentínovi. A to je dôvod, prečo sa na konci piesne hovorí: "Poprav ma ako sv. Valentína" Táto pieseň je opäť o mne chcieť byť vykúpený z osamelosti a prebudený k životu bez ohľadu na cenu.
The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness
Je to slovná hračka klasickej vety "Predzvesť blížiacej sa katastrofy". Pieseň a názov tematicky nadväzuje na "Scared to death“, že aj krásnych a príjemných vecí sa môžeš obávať. Názov môže byť považovaný za súhrn celého albumu. Ak si bol priateľom samoty tak dlho a žil život osamelého vlka, potrebuješ veľa odvahy, odvrátiť sa od tohto a urobiť krok do "krajiny živých". V tejto piesni som premýšľal o mojich ďalších krokoch. Ide o otázku, prečo sú tvoje sny a realita tak často od seba vzdialené, prečo je tak ťažké niektoré veci urobiť. Čo mi bráni povedať čo chcem povedať? V skratke: Strachu z neúspechu.
Ville Valo was, like many of his collegues, a bit skeptical when we asked him to analyze the 13 songs of Screamworks. But once the likeable Finn got started, he was barely stoppable.
"Hope was a very essential topic on the album, to be more specific – the fight for hope", explains Ville before we get to the single songs in more detail. "Many other artists who sing about hope think that it is something every single person carries within himself. I'm not so sure if that's true. For me, hope is the little light guiding you the way, which reminds you that life does have a sense, that you have goals. To believe in that is often more easily said than done."
In Venere Veritas
The starting point to that song was a conversation. The girl I was talking to said she had the feeling of falling apart. I answered: "Let's fall apart together." That's the origin of the line "Let's fall apart together now" which opens up the song. In a way this was a pick-up line. But you can't take that literally. It's not about slitting your wrists and kill yourselves together. But we won't live forever and every breath takes us closer to the moment we die. In that sense the line means "Let's grow old together." Seen like that the meaning of the song is pretty romantic but of course I like the fact that you can interpret it in different ways. However it's pretty direct and in your face and this was the reason why we picked the song to be the opener for the album. And I like the title being in Latin. It's a pun originating from "in vino veritas" (in wine there's truth). I was looking for the right word for love. First I had "Venus" which I have always loved and which was in the title of our last album. But then I realized that "venere" is much better since it's not so much about the spiritual side than the physical side of love. I don't speak Latin but it was great fun to figure out which word fits best and how you can interpret it.
Scared to Death
This song is about everybody making his experiences. Not all have been good ones but they stick in your memory and sometimes prevent you from darting into a new relationship. The chorus I'm not afraid to say I love you any more than I was before is about just that. Then there's the first line In the biblical sense and sensibility let me know you which is one of the most important lines on the album for me since knowing somebody in the biblical sense means having sex with him/her. "Let me know you in the biblical sense" is the best pick-up line I know – even though I haven't tried it yet! The line continuing with "... and sensibility" is a reference to Jane Austens "Sense and Sensibility". So the song is a mixture of romantic, almost whiny drama and the biblical paraphrase of getting to know someone – and all that in just one line. I'm a big fan of those details.
Heartkiller
This song is about rules of society, demands on you, which can often suffocate the flames of passion. So you should have the opportunity of letting yourself go and not being afraid to take risks on the way to happiness. My favorite line is Let me be a flatliner for a heartkiller because it's paradox. I'm a flatliner waiting for a heartkiller which kills him again. Like everything in life this is a cycle as well. The line Top hats off to the return of the beat to lick a wound to can be interpreted in different ways. Did I mean the beat of the rhythm of music or the heartbeat? I like it when you can interpret lyrics differently. On the one hand many lines have a very dry sense of humor and work with different cliches and then there is the personal aspect which I usually don't talk about because if I would the mystery would disappear.
Dying Song
This song symbolizes life for me. "Life is a dying song" – I think taken separately this is a very beautiful line. Life is like a song. It inevitably draws to a close. It dies away bit by bit but it's also like a song to which you can hum along: We hum along to the evening sun, till we are no more. This is one of the best lines I've ever written. Similar to In Venere Veritas it's not necessarily a motto like "Seize the Day" but it's about the perception that we're not gonna live forever and that we should value the time we have. Of course this is nothing new (laughs).
Disarm me (With your Loneliness)
With this song we get closer to a traditional rock ballad than never before. However the guitars on this track are harder than on many other tracks on the album. I've always been a sucker for Mazzy Star. The mood of this track is inspired by "Fade into you". I started working on this track years ago. The lyrics are about the deceitful nature of relationships in general.
Love, the hardes Way
It's about somebody being so close to your heart, whom you love so much that you can let him/her go. This is incredibly difficult since relationships and love – or what people call love – are full of egoism. At the end of the day it's often "I, I, I" instead of "I'm all yours!" In a way the song is about how difficult it is being in a relationship with me. "If you stay with me it won't be easy!" In this sense relationships are a series of problems which you solve together, like a mathematical equation which you solve by living together.
Katherine Wheel
This song was written from a very submissive position. I was in a situation where I had completely fallen for somebody. This is why These are the things you make me do, Katherine Wheel, I'm burning for you is one of the keylines of the whole album. The title is a homage to St. Katharina of Alexandria who should have been broken on the wheel but the wheel broke as is generally known. In the end she was beheaded. I like the aspect of rotation about that. The wheel turns like life. In the second verse it says Holding hands is not enough in a world giving head to a gun. For me this means that there are no taboos anymore in this world and people are forced to search for ever new extremes to test themselves and to detect the limits of their existance. Take teenagers for example: Smoking pott doesn't mean anything. In the 80s this was still a taboo. Nowadays the kids take Methamphetamines and do all kinds of crazy stuff. The new Rammstein video is a really good example: It's really funny but I know a lot of kids who really like Rammstein and they shouldn't be allowed to see that. As far as I know even some guys in the band have children. Would they really want their kids to see that video? For me this is crossing the line.
In the Arms of Rain
Starting point for that song was a childhood memory. I was running through the warm summer rain with my brother while the thunder was rolling behind us and you could see lightning in the sky. This is one of the strongest memories I have about my childhood. When I sat down to write that song I had to think about that moment. It's about us growing up and taking different paths but the rain still is the same than back then. As much as you realign yourself there are certain constants which never change.
Ode to Solitude
A lovesong to solitude if you picture it as a person. "Hey, dear Mr. Solitude – or Miss if you prefer that – I spent endless hours with you and your company is dear to me but now it's time to open the door and move on." This is better than locking yourself into your 4 walls like a hermite and turning your back on the world like I used to do. It's about celebrating the existance of solitude as there's no Ying without a Yang.
Shatter me with Hope
The song is absolutely positive. To have hope and be happy eventually you sometimes have to suffer first. You have to lay down on the nail bed to be able to reach a higher state of consciousness. This song is about something similar. "Please slay me with your love!" In the end the text is a cry for help. Come breath me in, bleed out all sorrow is pretty positive but we sing and play the song in a very aggressive way since I think that the fight for hope can be very aggressive and violent and might even leave some scars.
Acoustic Funeral (For Love in Limbo)
Black Sabbath have a song called "Electric Funeral" so the title is something like a homage. When I wrote the song I was reading a lot of T.S. Eliot. The famous line: "This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper" is by him. I mixed that with the vibe of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" (laughs). I thought about how there's often just silence at the end. It's about preparing for the moment when everything is said and done even though you really like that person. Even though it's a hopeful song.
Like St. Valentine
This is the first song we wrote for the album. This is why it's a bit more direct and punky than the rest. The song came into being when I was at a point where indeed everything seemed to be hopeless. I was singing the line "Hey baby let me be your valentine" to myself. For me this is typical for HIM – and somehow pretty stupid. That's why I wanted to include it into a song and find an unexpected turn. Then I read about St. Katharina of Alexandria and then about St. Valentine. And that's the reason why the end of the song says: "Behead my like St. Valentine." That song is again about me wanting to be redeemed from loneliness and awaken to live again no matter the cost.
The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness
This is a pun of the classical sentence "The Foreboding Sense of Impending Doom." The song and the title thematically affiliate to "Scared to Death": that you can be afraid of beautiful and nice things as well. The title can be read as a summary of the whole album. If you have been a friend of solitude for so long and have lived the life of a lonely wolf, you need a lot of courage to turn away from this and to take a step into the "land of the living". In this song I ponder about my next steps. It's about the question why your dreams and reality often are so far away from each other and why it's so difficult to get certain things done. What keeps me from saying the things I want to say? In short: It's probably about the fear to fail.
